Trackside Log for Thursday, November 22, 2012

Today I had the scanner on in the background and heard a clearance for an SD40-2 to depart Welland Yard for Kinnear Yard. I decided, since catching SD40-2s is quite difficult any more, to drive over to Farr Street to have a look.

  • 1142 Fenwick - CP 541 north - CP 5945-CP 6079-CP 5957

I was a little amused to see a trio of SD40-2s with a single covered hopper in tow. Mind you, they accelerated very quickly out of the slow order in Fenwick.

Trackside Log for Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Tonight was even foggier than yesterday. I decided to continue my experimental dark fog photography. Once again I had both trains 254 and 247 as subjects. The first train, Canadian Pacific 254 south, didn't work out as well as I'd hoped but my photograph of train 247 north was more interesting.

  • 2313 Fenwick - CP 254 south - CP 9641-CP AC4400CW
  • 2346 Fenwick - CP 247 north - CP 8802-CP AC4400CW-CP AC4400CW-CP ES44AC

Framing photographs in this much fog was mostly guesswork. I really didn't know if I had the camera pointed correctly or not. At least, thanks to the artificial horizon function, I knew the camera would be level.

Trackside Log for Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Tonight there was a bit of fog around town so I got to thinking what the scene would look like with a train illuminating it under those conditions. Since trains 254 and 247 usually meet in Welland Yard at night, I waited for them to approach town before driving over to Sumbler Road with Missy to experiment.

  • 2305 Fenwick - CP 254 south - CP 9735-CP AC4400CW
  • 2330 Fenwick - CP 247 north - CP 9662-CEFX AC4400CW

I think the results are interesting.

Trackside Log for Friday, November 9, 2011

Today I happened to hear horns approaching town so I walked over to the Canadian Pacific Hamilton Subdivision to see what it was.

  • 1337 Fenwick - CP 255 north - CP 9764-CP 8750-CP 5642-CP 5957-CP 5996

I was somewhat surprised to see the three SD40-2s that I'd photographed in Waterdown earlier in the week.

Trackside Log for Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Today I had an appointment in Hamilton. It was a rather nice day so I took my camera along in case I found anything to photograph afterward. I had the scanner on and not long after the appointment's conclusion I discovered that a northbound was leaving Canadian Pacific's Kinnear Yard. I decided on Waterdown for a photograph and specifically the Mill Street bridge.

  • 1430 Waterdown - CP 541 north - CP 5996-CP 5957-CP 5642

On my way back toward Aldershot I heard Canadian National train 435 conversing with car control about lifting two tracks in Brantford. I found them easily at the end of Howard Road.

  • 1441 Aldershot - CN 435 west - CN 5752-CN 5797-CN 4700

The train was backing a cut of cars, including an empty welded rail train, into Aldershot yard. When they passed by I discovered a GP38-2 parked on the track behind them.

  • 1442 Aldershot - CN power - CN 4710

After photographing the surprise 4710 I headed toward home.

Trackside Log for Sunday, November 4, 2012

Today was the first day of standard time. I hadn't really planned to do much but relax at home with Missy but I did turn the scanner on for some background noise. I heard train 246 working in Canadian Pacific's Welland yard and soon found out that train 255 was on the way. Once the northbound departed the yard I took Missy over to the Foss Road crossing to have a look.

  • 1153 Fenwick - CP 255 north - CP 9654-CP 8854

I thought the pair of 45s for power was numerically interesting but that was the last daylight train.
