Trackside Log for Thursday, July 29, 1999

Today I met up with a couple Sarnia railfans in the early morning. Our plan was to head over the border to Michigan and Ohio to photograph some American railway activity. I was just along for the ride and would be treated to a variety of locations. Our first stop was immediately after crossing the border in Port Huron, Michigan where we stumbled upon a Grand Trunk Western eastbound freight.

  • Port Huron, Michigan - GTW eastbound - CN 5454 +1 (light leak)

Our next stop took us into Dearborn and a quick pass by CSX's Rougemere Yard. Near the yard office next to Ferney and Industrial Streets we discovered two engines.

  • Dearborn, Michigan - CSX power - CSXT 2647
  • Dearborn, Michigan - CSX power - CSXT 4403

After a few photographs we continued on our way south and before long we arrived at Flat Rock. Here we took a quick tour through Grand Trunk Western's yard and photographed some of the motive power on hand.

  • Flat Rock, Michigan - GTW power - GTW 4916
  • Flat Rock, Michigan - GTW power - GTW 4907
  • Flat Rock, Michigan - GTW power - GTW 4633 "Operation Lifesaver"
  • Flat Rock, Michigan - IORY power - IORY 3804-IORY 3864

Farther south we stopped of at CSX's Stanley Yard in Walbridge. As we arrived we could see a pair of switch jobs and some light power moving around.

  • Walbridge, Ohio - CSX power - CSXT 5921
  • Walbridge, Ohio - CSX power - CSXT 2627-CSXT 2620
  • Walbridge, Ohio - CSX power - CSXT 8459-CSXT 5921-CSXT 8580

Our next destination was Fostoria. On our way there we ran across a westbound CSX train as we were passing through Bloomdale. We stopped for a quick photograph.

  • Bloomdale, Ohio - CSX westbound - CSXT 7703-CSXT 8559-CSXT 2566

Then we drove to Fostoria. This was busy. Throughout the afternoon there was little delay after a train passed through town before a signal was lit for the next one. It was an entertaining time.

  • Fostoria, Ohio - NS westbound - NS 9214-LMSX 716
  • Fostoria, Ohio - CSX eastbound - CSXT 7574-CSXT 7579
  • Fostoria, Ohio - CSX eastbound - CSXT 605-CSXT 9040
  • Fostoria, Ohio - CSX westbound - CSXT 7348-CSXT 8749
  • Fostoria, Ohio - NS westbound - CR 6361-BNSF 7079-NS 3416

  • Fostoria, Ohio - NS westbound - NS 4111-NS 8991
  • Fostoria, Ohio - CSX eastbound - CSXT 8223-CSXT 8204

After a while it was time to leave. On our way back north we once again stopped off at Walbridge. This time we passed by CSX's Walbridge Yard where we discovered a renumbered Conrail C40-8W parked in the open.

  • Wallbridge, Ohio - CSX power - CSXT 7396

As we were leaving the yard we encountered one of CSX's orange maintenance of way GP40s with a cut of hoppers at the north end.

  • Wallbridge, Ohio - CSX power - CSXT 9713 (maintenance of way)

We continued our way back home but didn't get far before encountering a Union Pacific tunnel motor and a Southern Pacific SD45 parked at the north end of Whitmore Yard.

  • Northwood, Ohio - CSX westbound - UP 4808-SP 7429

That was a very nice find and the lighting was superb. Fortuitous happenstance is a wonderful thing. By this time the sun was getting very low and we had taken our last photograph. We made our way back to Canada and called it a successful day.
