Trackside Log for Saturday, June 7, 2003

Today I was leaving Sault Ste. Marie. I'd been there for three weeks and was feeling rather homesick. The only goal I had before departure was to photograph the Agawa Canyon Tour Train. This was its inaugural run for the season so I made my way to the casino for a photograph. It was a dreary morning but at least I saw it.

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - AC 3 north - CN 5736-CN 5600

The train certainly didn't have the romance it once had with the Algoma Central F-units pulling it. Oh well. Time to head back home.

The only stop I made on the way home was in Mactier to see if Canadian Pacific had anything on hand. A power set was parked in the yard and train 274 was at the south siding switch.

  • Mactier, Ontario - CP power - CP 9548-CP 9569-CP 5623
  • Mactier, Ontario - CP 274 south - CP 9586

At long last I was back home. It had been a rewarding three weeks in Sault Ste. Marie both from a career and from a photography point of view.

Trackside Log for Friday, June 6, 2003

This was the final day of my contract at Algoma Steel. Like usual I drove past the Huron Central Railway yard before work. Today train 912 east was staged at Pim Street with the LLPX locomotive I'd seen over the last few days.

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - HCRY 912 east - HCRY 3011-LLPX 2261-HCRY 3010

After a photograph I headed to the steel plant for the last time.

Trackside Log for Thursday, June 5, 2003

Today I would only photograph a single train. Again at lunch time I was able to hear the ore train communicating with the bridge operators on its way into Canada. I took lunch down by the swing bridge again and photographed the northbound.

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - AC 411 north ore - WC 6001-CN 9592-CN 9618-CN 9544

The lead locomotive was a former Algoma Central SD40. Very nice.

Trackside Log for Wednesday, June 4, 2003

Once again I swung by the Huron Central Railway yard en route to work at Algoma Steel. The road power with the LLPX locomotive was still there so I photographed them again.

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - Huron Central Railway power - HCRY 3011-LLPX 2261-HCRY 3010

At lunch time I heard the ore train obtaining permission to cross the lift, knife and swing bridges on their way into Canada. I once again photographed them crossing the swing span on their way across the border.

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - AC 411 north ore - WC 3027-IC 6203-IC 3102-WC 2002

It was a nice mixture of power with the uniquely painted Wisconsin Central 3027 leading and a former Algoma Central GP38-2 trailing.

In the afternoon a pair of Wisconsin Central locomotives were stopped at the entrance to the Algoma Steel plant just waiting for my camera.

  • Steelton, Ontario - CN power - WC 7502-WC 1502

I was certainly enjoying the ease with which I was able to photograph the Canadian National trains at the steel plant.

Trackside Log for Tuesday, June 3, 2003

This morning my drive past the Huron Central yard was different. The power for train 911/912 was present. The surprise was that it wasn't all bright yellow. A LLPX locomotive was thrown between the standard GP40-2Ws.

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - Huron Central Railway power - HCRY 204-HCRY 201
  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - Huron Central Railway power - HCRY 3011-LLPX 2261-HCRY 3010

Later, at work, I was able to spot a soutbound getting ready to depart from the Canadian National yard. I walked to the Algoma Steel entrance to find a combined freight and empty ore train.

  • Steelton, Ontario - CN 412 south combined - GCFX 6036-CN 9543-CN 9544

There weren't any Wisconsin Central SD45s today, but the consecutively numbered Canadian National GP40-2Ws were interesting.

Trackside Log for Monday, June 2, 2003

Well, I didn't find the empty ore train today, but I did find that same former Algoma Central GP7 at the south end of the yard. I grabbed a couple photographs.

  • Steelton, Ontario - CN switcher - WC 1502

Then I resumed my work.

Trackside Log for Sunday, June 1, 2003

It was the first day of June and the beginning of the final week of my contract at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie. That morning I headed over to the plant to see if anything was happening on the former Algoma Central. I discovered the St. Mary's Paper GE 80-ton switcher shunting pulpwood cars again. I took a quick photograph.

  • Steelton, Ontario - St. Mary's Paper switcher - SMP 775-52-1

A short time later I heard the loaded ore train talk to the lift bridge operators for permission to cross the river and canal into Canada. I headed over to the swing span for a photograph.

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - CN 411 north ore - WC 7524-CN 9455

Before the morning was done the empty ore train also made a move. I photographed it at the same location under the International Bridge.

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - CN 412 south empty ore - WC 7526

That would be all I'd photograph that day.
